Return of the cardigan

Best cardigans A:W 2017

Never did I ever…think that I would write a post for the fashion category of my blog about cardigans.

It’s happening though, guys; the cardigan is back and I’m actually wearing one. It’s been quite difficult to avoid them until now if I’m honest, because they’ve been all over the place for the last few months – and like the slave to shopping that I am, I eventually ended up bringing one home. I was getting quite bored of spotting what looked like a potentially nice jumper, only to get over to it and switch off when I saw that the front was in fact open, so in the end I had to take the plunge and snap up a cardi.

Is it cardi? Cardy? Cardie?! See, I don’t even know the lingo. I admit it, I’m a cardigan novice.

I know what some of you will be thinking; how can cardigans be ‘back’? Since when did cardigans go away?! And to that I say; don’t judge me, okay…you must just be cooler and hotter than I am. I haven’t worn one for ages and I presumed I wouldn’t again for a while. I threw out all of the ones that I owned probably four years ago now, and that’s not because they weren’t ‘in’ – that doesn’t really bother me – it’s because I realised how ugly all of mine were and how terribly frumpy I looked in them.

Side note: frumpy is an awful word isn’t it? The way that word sounds when you say it really sums up how I felt in cardigans. That’s why they had to go – they weren’t making me feel like my best self.

It was annoying, in a way, because I still saw many a beautifully dressed babe wearing one and not looking anything like a sack of potatoes. I guess they just really suit some people and fit in seamlessly with their personal style. Plus, since I looked so horrendous in them where others looked terribly cool, I also kind of associated them with the kind of people who just look great in everything they wear.

So anyway, to get to the point; I’ve spent the past few years being very averse to cardigans, but now just as they’re back on fashion’s radar they’ve also made their way back into my wardrobe. One has, anyway, despite the fact that I still think I might look a bit weird in it. It’s a lovely autumnal aubergine colour, oversized, with cable knit detailing down the front. It was a mere £13 from Primark, because obviously if you’re testing the waters with something you don’t go all out and go to Topshop like a frivolous beast.

I’m pleased to report that I really like it; it’s so warm, so soft, and so much like a dressing gown (aka one of my top three items of clothing). You cardigan fans are really on to something here, and I’ve been a fool. I even want to buy another one – I have my beady little eye on this red one, this embroidered one and obviously this little mustard cutie.

I wish I could tell you about how to wear this season’s knitwear must-have, but alas, I have no idea, and in any case, the answer is; however you damn well please. The slinky slip dress with ankle boots and chunky cardigan I’ve been seeing on Instagram and Pinterest looks divine, but I’m too much of a cold person to try that one I think. I switched it in where I’d usually put a blazer, with coated jeans and a simple tee, studded boots and a bag that almost matches the knit. I also popped on my trusty baker boy, which  does nothing to aid the grandpa comparisons, but I’ve managed to convince myself that it makes anything look cool. Not sure the people walking past while we took these snaps would agree judging by their facial expressions and sniggers, but whatever.

Are you a cardigan lover?

  1. Yup. I wouldn’t say I love them exactly, but for work I prefer dresses to trousers in Winter, so they’re a necessity, especially since there is no such thing as a stable temperature in my office, so I need something warm that I can strip off at a moments notice 😂

  2. This suits you so well and I love it! Do they do it in lots of different colours because for only £13 i may have to get one myself… I have some really old chunky cardigans but for some reason I tend to only wear them in the house – I used to wear them out all the time but I think I ended up feeling a little frumpy in them too! I probably need to change that!

  3. I’ve always been a huge cardigan lover, they are so comfy and you can throw them on when you have really no inspo whatsoever and still look nice (maybe I also looked frumpy but didn’t care a bit?) You look great and the colour of this cardi is simply gorgeous -obsessed with anything aubergine this autumn. Anyways, hope you had a great weekend! Xx
